LESSON OBSERVATION 3
Asking students "Who has something black?", throwing a teddy bear and asking "How are you today?", "What is your name?" and giving directions such as "stand up", "sit down", "clap your hands" are some of the warm-up activities that precede the class. Guessing the drawings on the board is the next activity in the lesson. This activity also develops their creative thinking skills. The teacher draws pictures on the board step by step, asking the students to tell what they see on each step. She wants them to guess the drawing before it is completely done. I think this activity is a great approach to get the students communicating to each other and they will feel excited and motivated when they give the right response and keep guessing.
For the next activity, the teacher divided students into two groups called "apples" and "bananas". This activity was my favorite because the teacher makes use of every step she uses during the classroom; she wants students in the group apples to count the group bananas and this is a great example to show the importance of preparing a ground to learn something new.
The next activity was about good or bad. Students decided the bad character and they choose the witch. Then, during the storytelling activity, the story "Winnie and the Witch" showed that the witch is not the bad character. I really liked it when the teacher asked the students before and after the storytelling whether the witch was good or bad. It made a good transition between two activities. I think the teacher wasted time for students to sit properly. This could have arranged before.
The last activity was guessing the number on the cards. The teacher showed a small part of the number and asked students to guess the number. When students guessed the number correctly, the teacher gave the card to students. Then, she wanted them do give the cards back in order (1, 2, 3, 4...).
I really liked the classroom management in this lesson. The teacher applied many activities to engage the whole class and used gestures and body language well. The reinforcements were quite positive, which is something good to enhance students' motivation.
