Lesson Observation 1 (School Practice)

Class: 1

Lesson title: Body Parts

At the beginning of the lesson, while the teacher was taking attendance, she had each student do a gesture such as "raise your hand and give your friend a high five", "raise your hand and wave". She told a student who was wearing a mask in class to take his mask off as a gesture. This was a great way to get the student follow the classroom rules without upsetting him.

Then, the teacher called a student, gave him a card with the name of the body part and pointed out to the word on the card on his face. She asked the other students to imitate and say the name of the body part. Then, she asked the student "is it true?" after the student answered "yes", she gave him a magnet and asked him to hang the word on the whiteborad. She repeated this activity 5-6 times with different students. I really liked this activity because even though only a few students were chosen, all the students in the class actively participated.

The next activity was about these flashcards again. The teacher numbered the cards and counted them with students. Then, she asked the students to look at the cards for 10 seconds and when the time was up, the teacher took one of the cards and asked students "what is number 4?". She continued the activity by increasing the number of the cards she took. When a students answered wrong, she turned to the class and asked "class, yes or no?" to get feedback from the whole class. Finally, she took all the cards and had the students tell all the body parts.

Then, one by one, she turned the cards over and said "bye-bye ear", "bye-bye hand" etc. Students easily understood what she did and they started to say with her. Then, students said the words in the correct order from 1 to 6. This activity was very effective in reinforcing what the students had learned. They easily remembered both the words and their correct order.

The lesson continued with a game. The teacher asked students to come to the carpet, she chose a student and whispered a sentence to his ear such as "I have got ears" and they played telephone game (whispered the sentence to each others ear). This game was very effective in terms of developing both listening and speaking skills, while reinforcing the "I have got..." pattern.

The next activity was about matching the words with pictures. The teacher observed students' attention to the lesson by making some deliberate mistakes. I think it was good because she encouraged them to think. Then, they played the game called "Simon Says". Thanks to the this game, the students learned the meaning of some instructions such as "nod your head" and "wave your eyebrows". Afterwards, the teacher asked students to draw a face and had them write the names of the body parts.

At the end of the lesson, they all sang a song about body parts and danced. They improved both their listening and speaking skills by singing the song. While doing this, touching the body parts mentioned in the song helped them to retain what they had learned.
